Ethics of Society & Ethics of Communication Working Group 

The Ethics of Society & Ethics of Communication Working Group (ETH) will be holding elections for one vice chair position, for the term 2022 - 2026.

The current officers of the Working Group are Elvira García (chair) and María Teresa Nicolás (vice chair). Gilberto Alves Araujo has stepped down from his position as vice chair.

The elections will be held online from 20 May until 5 July using the SurveyMonkey platform.

Eligible members of IAMCR and of the ETH working group, are able to stand for a position and to vote. To verify if you are a member of the ETH working group, log in to your IAMCR account and select “My Sections and Working Groups” from the menu.

Interested candidates must send their name, institutional position, a statement of no more than 500 words and a photograph to elections@iamcr.org with a copy to the SWG elections coordinator Andrea Medrado (A.Medrado@westminster.ac.uk) and to the ETH Working Group’s current officers, Elvira García (egarcia@uchceu.es) and María Teresa Nicolás (mnicolas@up.edu.mx), no later than 29 April.

Statements

Ben Hur Demeneck (State University of Ponta Grossa, Brazil)

I stand for the position of Vice-Chair of the Ethics of Society and Ethics of Communication Working Group after having actively participated in IAMCR since 2012. In 2016 I was invited to join the Scientific Committee of the ETH WG Pre-Conference (Leicester) and, later, to lead the Young Scholars Ethics Network, along with Hugo Sánchez from UNAM (Mexico). My involvement with the association and the ETH WG at an early stage was a motivating force to develop my career as a researcher. Given my experience as an emerging scholar representative of the Global South, I am aware of the importance of creating opportunities for career development. I am committed to promote global inclusiveness and diversity and to encourage the participation of emerging scholars, women and researchers from disadvantaged regions.

If I am elected, my main goals are to foster IAMCR core values within all the activities of the WG, help emerging scholars and stimulate critical research. Also, in collaboration with current officers Chair Elvira García de Torres and Vice-chair Teresa Nicolás Gavilán:

  • Enlarge the community of researchers with a multicultural approach
  • Support the organization of conferences and publications
  • Motivate the participation of WG members in new academic pursuits
  • Attract and support scholars from disadvantaged regions
  • Continue the collaboration with other WG and Sections as well as other associations and networks, including practitioners.
  • Pitch for funds for projects by the members
  • Increase communication along the year and
  • Contribute to make our voice stronger

I hold a PhD in Communication Sciences from the School of Communications and Arts at the University of São Paulo (ECA-USP). UEPG alumnus and Master in Journalism at UFSC, I have served since 2016 as Journalism professor at the State University of Ponta Grossa. My interest in Ethics of Communication and Society covers not only research but also practice: I have been acting as ombudsman for two years in the newspaper RelevO (Curitiba) and currently I collaborate as editor for Veneta publishing house (São Paulo). I am the recipient of the Adelmo Genro Filho Award from the Brazilian Association of Researchers in Journalism and fellowships by Agencia Capes (Brazil) and Cosecha Anfibia (Argentina).

Kanchan K. Malik (University of Hyderabad, India)

Dr. Kanchan K. Malik is a Professor in the Department of Communication at the University of Hyderabad, India, where she also served as Head from 2017 to 2020. She has been a Faculty Fellow with ‘UNESCO Chair on Community Media’ since 2011 and Editor of the e-newsletter –‘CR News’. With a dual Master’s in Economics and Mass Communication, Kanchan worked as a journalist with ‘The Economic Times’, New Delhi, before settling for a career in academics. Kanchan’s teaching and research are in the areas of Community Media, Women in Community Communications, Journalism Studies, and Media Ethics. She has worked and published research on “Religions, Ethics and Attitudes towards Corruption” as part of the Religions and Development project of the University of Birmingham. She co-produced the Community Radio Continuous Improvement Toolkit (CR-CIT) based on codes of practice and non-negotiable ethical principles for community media. The U.S. Consulate General, Hyderabad, awarded her the United States Federal Grant to develop an academic curriculum for Media Ethics in collaboration with SUNY, Plattsburgh. Kanchan has co-authored with Prof. Vinod Pavarala the much-cited book ‘Other Voices: The Struggle for Community Radio in India’ (Sage: 2007). Her recent co-edited book is titled ‘Community Radio in South Asia: Reclaiming the Airwaves’ (Routledge: 2020). She is the lead writer of the manual ‘Strengthening Gender Sensitive Practices and Programming in Community Radio’ (UNESCO, 2021).

Being a scholar from the Global South, I hope to bring more inclusivity and democratic participation in taking forward the envisioned mission of our Working Group (WG) and simultaneous endeavour:

  1. To stimulate that the WG members work together beyond IAMCR conferences, develop collaborative work and exchanges consistently and regularly, resorting to social networking platforms such as Facebook and LinkedIn if needed. 
  2. To establish and enhance interactions and collective work between our WG and working groups on media ethics of other communication researchers’ associations, institutes, and NGOs.
  3. To democratically prioritize issues presented by the members of the WG when preparing panels dedicated to reflections on ethics.
  4. To organize more dialogue between the WG and other IAMCR Sections and WGs, resulting in publishing books and journal articles together.
  5. To advocate, before the IAMCR board, for the inclusion of issues around ethics in the plenary sessions during the conferences.
  6. To make public consultations regarding the organization of the WG, the elaboration of projects and the application of possible financial resources from IAMCR to the initiatives.
  7. To encourage and strengthen the participation of emerging scholars and graduate students.
  8. To promote WG members to evaluate the submitted abstracts.
  9. To improve the visibility of the WG’s actions, using IAMCR channels like email, website, and newsletter, considering proposals sent, consistently answering suggestions, and sending regular messages with calls for papers and events.
  10. To organize or co-organize pre-conferences on ethics and related issues.
