IAMCR offers travel grants of up to US$ 1,500 each to members who are early-stage scholars and would otherwise be unable to attend our conferences.

Applicants must have been IAMCR members for at least one full year (i.e. it must be at least their second year as a member of the association), reside in a low or middle income country (see IAMCR's country classification list), and have an abstract accepted for full presentation at the conference. Details, including deadlines and procedures for applying, are announced early each year on the website, newsletter, mailing lists and various social media.

Please consider making a donation to the travel grant fund when you renew your membership. It's a great way to encourage emerging scholars and new perspectives within IAMCR.

From the Amazon to Lyon

Antônio Eduardo de Oliveira Junior, a graduate student at the Postgraduate Programme in Society and Borders, Federal University of Roraima, Brazil, was awarded a travel grant to present his paper "Identity on the Border: a reflection on "be" in Pacaraima, Brazil" to the Diaspora and Media Working Group, at IAMCR 2023 in Lyon.

23 travel grants for 2023

This year, 23 travel grants were awarded to early-stage scholars who are also members of IAMCR from low and middle-income countries. The grants provided them with the opportunity to participate in and present their work at the Lyon conference. Among the recipients, there were 13 women and 10 men, representing 16 different countries.

From Dreams to Reality

Aniruddha Jena, an Assistant Professor at Indian Institute of Management Kashipur, India, was awarded a travel grant to present his paper "Countering the global and consolidating the local: The case of Radio Dhimsa in Koraput, Odisha" to the Community Communication and Alternative Media Section, at IAMCR 2023 in Lyon.

A golden opportunity

Gideon Tehwui Lambiv is a PhD student and Assistant Lecturer at the School of Mass Communication (ASMAC/ESSTIC) of the University of Yaounde II in Cameroon. He was awarded a travel grant to present his paper "Globalization, Deregulation and Public Service Broadcasting in Cameroon" to the Public Service Media Policies Working Group.

Truly a rich experience

Sadia Jamil, an independent researcher from Pakistan received a travel grant to attend IAMCR 2019 in Madrid. She presented her paper "A widening digital divide and its impacts on existing social inequalities and democracy in Pakistan" to the Digital Divide Working Group.

Fostering emerging scholars’ careers: a valuable lesson by IAMCR

Gilberto Alves Araújo is a PhD candidate at the School of Literature, Languages and Media of the University of the Witwatersrand, in South Africa. He received a travel grant to present his paper "Black immigrants in Brazilian and South African media: a Critical Discourse Analysis through the conceptions of race and ethnicity" to the Diaspora and Media Working Group.

A fantastic experience

Allen Munoriyarwa, a Doctoral Student at the University of Johannesburg, Republic of South Africa, received a travel grant to present his paper "Who is the arbiter of truth? Mainstream journalists’ responses to fake news during the military coup in Zimbabwe" at IAMCR 2019 in Madrid.

A Community with Common Interests

Dasniel Olivera Pérez, a Doctoral Student at Universidad Iberoamericana (Mexico) and Assistant Professor at Universidad de la Habana (Cuba), received a travel grant to present the paper "Inter-Influences in the Cuban journalistic culture in the current context of the political-professional debates on the (des) regulation of the media system" at IAMCR 2019 in Madrid.

IAMCR made me proud

David Katiambo, a Doctoral Student at the University of South Africa and Assistant Lecturer at Technical University of Kenya received a travel grant to attend IAMCR 2019 in Madrid. He reflects on the experience and the importance of receiving the travel grant at this point of his career.

Twenty one travel grants to defray the cost of attending IAMCR 2019 will help early-stage scholars who are members of IAMCR from low and middle income countries. The winners include 9 women and 12 men from 17 different countries. Two of the grants were funded by generous donations from IAMCR members.

Travel grants for Oregon 2018

Update: Eighteen travel grants have been offered to IAMCR members from 13 lower income countries. Sixteen of the grants were funded with a portion of IAMCR membership fees. Two additional grants were provided by generous donations of generous donations by IAMCR members who asked that their names not be announced.

Travel Grant to Honour Dipak De

The Dipak De Travel Grant for Early-career South Asian Scholars was established in 2018 to honour the memory of Prof Dipak De. Dipak was a valued member and supporter of IAMCR, having served on the International Council and the Finance Committee, where he arranged the association's annual audit over a span of several years. In 2015 he was awarded the association's Distinguished Contribution Award.

Diverse participants & topics

Willemien Calitz is a PhD student at the University of Cape Town in South Africa currently researching China-Africa and the media. She was awarded an IAMCR travel grant to present two papers: "Influences on South African and Chinese journalists covering China’s human rights and sustainable development record" to the Emerging Scholars Network and "From Rhino Poaching to Mining: The Coverage of China’s Human Rights and Sustainability Record in South African Media" to the International Communication Section. She wrote us with her reflections on IAMCR 2017.

Grant winner reflects on IAMCR conference

Trang Pham is a resident of Vietnam and PhD candidate at the University of Calgary. She received a travel grant to present her paper, "Vietnam’s Broadband Internet - Farmers’ Agency vs. Public Discourse: A Case Study to Extend Social Construction of Technology Theories in the South" to the Communication Policy and Technology Section at IAMCR's 2017 conference in Cartagena, Colombia. She also received a travel grant to attend the 2016 conference in Leicester, UK

The winners include 14 women and 6 men from 12 different countries. The grants are worth more than US$27,000. One of the grants was funded by an anonymous donor.

My academic home

Chikezie Uzuegbunam was at Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Nigeria when he applied for a travel grant to attend IAMCR 2016 in Leicester but has since relocated to the University of Cape Town in South Africa. In this article he talks about what IAMCR and the travel grants have meant to him and his career.

A great experience

Dorismilda Flores Márquez, of the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Occidente and the Universidad Autónoma de Aguascalientes (Mexico), received a travel grant to attend IAMCR 2016 in Leicester. She presented papers to the Emerging Scholars Section and the Community Communication Section.

Travel grants awarded

A record number of 27 travel grants worth almost US$40,000 have been offered to early-stage scholars who are members of IAMCR from low and middle income countries. The winners include 19 women and 8 men from 13 different countries. The list of winners is published on the IAMCR website.

Travel grants foster diversity

Patricia Lima is a health communication researcher in Paraguay's Ministry of Public Health. She received a travel grant to attend IAMCR 2015 in Montreal and to present her paper, "Patterns and risk communication issues during the contingency against Chikungunya in print media of Paraguay, from June to October 2014" to the Environment, Science and Risk Communication Working Group.

A redefining experience

K.S. Mochish is a Doctoral Fellow at the School of Media and Cultural Studies of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences in Mumbai, India. He received a travel grant to present the paper "Negotiating Gender and Caste Publicly: An Analysis of the Struggles of a Woman Tribal Leader in Wayanad, India" to the Gender and Communication Section.

Diversity is essential to IAMCR

Luíza Alvim was temporarily employed as a lecturer in communication at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil when she received a travel grant to attend IAMCR's 2015 conference in Montreal. She presented her paper, “Rhythms of images and sounds: an analysis of films by Robert Bresson”, in the Visual Culture Working Group.

A very rewarding experience

Nelly Lara, a PhD student in the Facultad de Ciencias Políticas y Sociales of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), received a travel grant to attend IAMCR's 2015 conference in Montreal. Her paper, Discursive practices of women artists in Mexico City's Hip Hop culture, was presented in the Gender and Communication Section.
