Community Communication and Alternative Media Section
The Community Communication and Alternative Media (CAM) Section will be holding online elections in 2020 for one co-Chair and one Vice-chair positions.
Andrea Medrado and Claudia Magallanes-Blanco are completing their first mandates this year as co-Chair and Vice chair and have decided to step down.
The elections will be held online from 6 to 12 July 2020 using the SurveyMonkey platform. Voting lists will be generated on 10 June. Individual members and representatives of institutional members who are also registered as members of the CAM Section at the time the voting lists are generated will be sent ballots. Members who join the Section after the voting list has been generated will not be able to vote.

Since 2008 I have been participating in this Section and have been sharing with it my ongoing research projects. I have acted as chair in panels, debates and work groups. In 2017 I was honored with the responsibility of being the leader of the Local Committee, which organized this Conference in Cartagena de Indias. For two years I worked on making all the arrangements for it.
I am proud to have been the leader of new processes back then, as well as having guided dialogues between the academia and society, organizing field visits with the research groups to community projects. We organized and environmentally friendly event. We provided family jobs amongst those families most in need, through consuming meals prepared by them, and we sponsored mass participation in sectors which were present in this congress for the first time, through the presentation of their projects, as American Native population who came from Canada to Argentina.
I have been involved with the network for more than 12 years and it is based on this experience that I am presenting my candidacy for the position of CAM Chair in the period to come.
It is Community Communication that gives visibility and underpins the debate on intercultural relationships, inclusion, the way in which we relate to our planet and reaches out to social individuals who struggle from the margins of society. It is the context in which strategic topics that impact majorities are included, where communication coming from the base of society is confronted, where new topics become concrete, and where problems and priorities in this field are established.
As Chair of this section, I will join my colleagues, the chair and the co-chair, in encouraging participation and conversations about emerging problems in the above context. Many of these discussions come from the Global South Regions, and they invite us to revisit not only the topics in question, but also the methodologies of conversation, presentation and socialization. The global pandemic we are experiencing and its consequences on our social fabric, will surely provide lessons that will lead to change.
Our CAM Section, is a privileged spot to ensure these topics surface and become visible so they can be debated and positioned within our networks, universities and places of impact.
My commitment as Chair will be to work with my colleagues and the members of this section as a team, so as to bring about those important transformations that are desperately needed in current times.

I have been active with CAM for 10 years, and see it as my primary intellectual home within IAMCR. I have presented to CAM at every IAMCR at which I have been present, and consider myself an active member of the section, reviewing papers, mentoring, assisting as needed as session chairs, etc.
I am a lecturer at the National University of Ireland Galway, where I have worked since 2014. My PhD is from the Institute of Communications Research (ICR) at the University of Illinois (USA), and my MA from Dublin City University (Ireland). My work focuses on the political economy of community media, and I hold a 'New Foundations' grant from the Irish Research Council to progress my research on the sustainability of community media. I have, with Salvatore Scifo, prepared two special issues of JoACM on this topic (the second forthcoming), and I have recently hosted a conference in Ireland on the related topic of resilience in community media.
CAM is a large and diverse group within IAMCR, and I have, since my first conference, found my engagement energising and inspiring - I want, as a member of the leadership team, to help ensure that is continues to be the experience of all those who wish to get involved with the section.
This includes continuing the work of CAM leadership to champion inclusion, in its various forms, within IAMCR. Examples of this has included inclusion of multi-lingual sessions, use of OURmedia and other alliances to reach beyond the academy, and the piloting of remote/video presentations. Affordability of IAMCR has been an area where CAM have offered important contributions to debate, as well as taking concrete steps internally, and I hope to contribute productively in this area.
It also includes being open to new ideas about how we can foster and support CAM as an intellectual community. More than ever, we need to be open to new ways we can interact, where they might improve or complement current practice, fostering the continued health and vibrancy of our own community.
I am committed to continuing to contribute to the success and development of the section. I hope that the membership will support my goal of doing to as a member of the leadership team.

Llevo 10 años trabajando para la Sección CAM y la percibo como mi hogar intelectual dentro de la IAMCR. He presentado trabajos en cada Congreso IAMCR/AIERI en el que he participado y me considero un miembro activo de la sección por cuanto he revisado comunicaciones, asesorado como mentor y he moderado sesiones y paneles, entre otras tareas.
Soy profesor de la Universidad Nacional de Irlanda en Galway, donde trabajo desde 2014. Cursé doctorado en el Instituto de Investigación en Comunicaciones (ICR) de la Universidad de Illinois (EE.UU.), y máster en la Universidad de la Ciudad de Dublín (Irlanda). Mi trabajo se centra en la economía política de los medios comunitarios, y en la actualidad dispongo de una beca "New Foundations” del Consejo de Investigación Irlandés para avanzar en mi investigación sobre la sostenibilidad de estos medios. Con Salvatore Scifo, he coordinado dos números especiales de la revista JoACM sobre el mismo tema (el segundo de próxima aparición) y, recientemente, he organizado una conferencia en Irlanda sobre la cuestión, también relacionada, de la resiliencia en los medios comunitarios.
La CAM es un grupo grande y diverso dentro de la IAMCR/AIERI y, desde mi primera conferencia, considero que mi compromiso ha sido vibrante e inspirador – Como miembro del equipo directivo, espero entonces contribuir a que esta siga siendo la experiencia de todas aquellas personas que deseen involucrarse con la sección.
Esto incluye dar continuidad al trabajo que ya se lleva desempeñando desde la dirección de la CAM para reforzar la inclusión de estas temáticas, en sus diversas formas, dentro de la IAMCR. Ejemplo de esto han sido organización de sesiones multilingües, el uso de OURmedia y otras alianzas para trascender lo estrictamente académico, y la realización de presentaciones a distancia o en vídeo. La permeabilidad de la IAMCR/AIERI ha sido una esfera en la que la sección CAM ha ofrecido importantes contribuciones para el debate, así como en la adopción de medidas concretas a nivel interno. En esta línea de trabajo también espero poder contribuir de manera activa.
Asimismo, esto incluye estar atento a la incorporación de nuevas ideas sobre cómo podemos fomentar y apoyar a la CAM como comunidad intelectual. Más que nunca, necesitamos estar abiertos/as a nuevas formas de interacción que puedan mejorar o complementar la práctica actual, fomentando una salud y vitalidad permanentes para nuestra comunidad académica.
Me comprometo a seguir contribuyendo al éxito y desarrollo de la sección. Espero que los miembros de IAMCR apoyen mi objetivo de formar parte del equipo de dirección.

I am an associate professor at Southern Illinois University, currently a Marie S. Curie Fellow (Loughborough University) and Visiting Scholar (Centre for Research on Social Movements Studies, Scuola Normale Superiore). I am fluent in English and Italian and have working knowledge of Spanish and French. I would like to nominate myself as co-chair of the Community Communication and Alternative Media section (CAM), my ‘home base’ at IAMCR since 2010. I first attended IAMCR in 1995 (Slovenia). I have presented at the CAM section regularly since 2010, discussing my research on themes such as alternative media in post-disaster situations, ultra-right movements media and communication strategies, and anti-feminist ‘alternative’ media. I have contributed to the Section by chairing panels, mentoring emerging scholars, offering to review manuscripts, and participating in social events and post conferences (Eugene 2018, Madrid 2019).
My research has moved from progressive alternative media to the alternative media of the ultra-right. My work on ultra-right media has confirmed, even more solidly, my conviction of the importance of progressive social movements media, of which anti-fascism and solidarity are distinctive elements. I have authored a monograph, articles and book chapters on media and democracy, and social movements’ media, and contributed entries on Antifascist Media and Vatican Media to the Encyclopedia of Social Movement Media (2011) edited by John Downing. I sit on the advisory board of the International Journal of Communication.
If elected, I would work with the leadership team to further improve professional collaboration and communication among the members. I would continue to foster an inclusive atmosphere, welcoming emerging scholars from a variety of intellectual traditions and contexts. I would actively pursuit partnerships with sister sections inside IAMCR, including the Political Economy and the Gender and Communication sections, and continue to promote our multi-lingual presentations. Moreover, I would support CAM’s tradition of strengthening relationships with anti-fascist and resistant media activists.
The vision that I want to contribute to is defined by the interconnectedness of research and practice, and a commitment to scholarship as a vehicle for progressive social change. This vision is in line with the objectives of the section to advance research on the theories and practices of community and alternative media. Finally, if elected, I would join in the decade-long efforts to make the IAMCR a more accessible organization—conference fees continue to represent an obstacle for many—and voice the instances of our members at the leadership level.

Je voudrai me présenter pour la charge de coprésidente du Community Communication and Alternative Media section (CAM), mon ‘centre opérationnel’ chez la IAMCR depuis 2010.
J’ai intégré le IAMCR en 1995 (Slovénie). J’ai assisté régulièrement dans les sections du CAM depuis 2010, en contribuant avec mes recherches sur les médias populaires alternatifs dans des situations après les catastrophes, sur l’utilisation des médias et les stratégies communicatives des mouvements sociaux d’extrême-droite, sur les figures des femmes activistes dans des mouvements sociaux néofascistes, et sur les médias alternatifs antiféministes. J’ai apporté ma contribution à l’activité de la section de plusieurs façons : en présidant les tables rondes, à travers mon tutorat pour les chercheurs émergents, en offrant ma révision pour des articles, et en participant aux événements sociaux et évènements post-conférence (Eugene 2018, Madrid 2019).
Mon activité de chercheuse s’est déplacée du domaine des médias alternatifs progressistes vers les médias alternatifs d’extrême-droite. Mon travail sur ces derniers m’a convaincue, d’une manière encore plus solide, de l’importance des médias populaires alternatifs progressistes, desquels ils sont des éléments distinctifs l’antifascisme et la solidarité. Je suis autrice d’un livre, articles et chapitres sur les médias et démocratie, et médias des mouvements sociaux, et j’ai contribué à la rédaction des entrées encyclopédiques concernent les médias antifascistes et les médias vaticans dans l’Encyclopedia of Social Movement Media (2011), édité par John Downing. Je fais partie du conseil consultatif du International Journal of Communication.
Si ma candidature était acceptée, je travaillerais avec la direction actuelle pour continuer à améliorer la collaboration professionnelle entre les membres. J’aimerai aussi continuer à promouvoir une atmosphère inclusive, en accueillant des chercheurs émergents et des professionnels de différents domaines intellectuels et de différents contextes, et je continuerai à promouvoir le multilinguisme de nos présentations. Je voudrai contribuer à promouvoir une vision et une façon de travailler définie par l’interconnexion entre recherche et pratique, et par l’intention de faire de nôtres activités de recherche un moyen utile pour un progressive changement social.
Ma vision est en ligne avec les objectifs de la section d’avancer dans la recherche sur théories et pratiques des médias alternatifs, et sur les mouvements sociaux et les activistes des médias. En conclusion, j'aiderais à l’effort, qui est déjà poursuit, pour faire de la IAMCR une organisation plus transparente et accessible – le problème du payement d’un frais pour participer aux conférences est encore un obstacle pour plusieurs personnes– et pour continuer à faire arriver les demandes des membres de la section au niveau directif.

Me gustaría postularme al rol de copresidenta del Community Communication and Alternative Media section (CAM), mi ‘base operativa’ en el IAMCR desde el año 2010.
He entrado a formar parte del IAMCR en 1995 (Slovenia). He presenciado en las secciones del CAM regularmente desde el año 2010, contribuyendo con mis investigaciones sobre medios de comunicación alternativos populares en situaciones posteriores a una emergencia, sobre la estrategia de comunicación de movimientos sociales de ultraderecha, sobre figuras de activistas mujeres en movimientos sociales neofascistas, y sobre medios ‘alternativos’ antifeministas. He contribuido a la actividad de la sección presidiendo mesas redondas, trámite mi tutoría a estudiosos emergentes, ofreciendo mi actividad de revisión para artículos, y participando en eventos sociales y eventos pos-conferencia (Eugene 2018, Madrid 2019).
Mi actividad de investigación fue desplazándose del ámbito de los medios alternativos de matriz progresista, a medios alternativos de ultraderecha. Mi trabajo sobre estos últimos confirmó, en manera aun mas sólida, mi convicción de la importancia de los medios de movimientos sociales progresistas, de los cuales son elementos distintivos el antifascismo y la solidaridad. Soy autora de un libro, artículos y capítulos de libros sobre la democracia y los medios, y los medios de movimientos sociales, y contribuí en la redacción de las voces sobre Medios Antifascistas y Medios Vaticanos en la Encyclopedia of Social Movement Media (2011), editada por John Downing. Soy parte del consejo asesor del International Journal of Communication.
Si mi postulación fuese aceptada, trabajaría con la dirección actual para seguir mejorando la colaboración profesional entre los miembros. Me gustaría también seguir promoviendo un clima inclusivo, acogiendo a estudiosos emergentes y a profesionales de diferentes ámbitos intelectuales y de diferentes contextos. Buscaría activamente colaboraciones con secciones afines dentro de la IAMCR, como la sección de Economía Política y de Estudios de Genero y Comunicación, y seguiría promoviendo nuestras presentaciones en varios idiomas. También creo en la necesidad de seguir reforzando nuestras relaciones con activistas de medios antifascistas, relaciones que tradicionalmente la CAM lleva adelante.
Quisiera contribuir en promover una visión definida por la interconexión entre investigación y práctica, y por el intento de hacer de las actividades de investigación un medio útil para un progresivo cambio social. Dicha visión está en línea con los objetivos de la sección de avanzar en la investigación sobre teorías y practicas de medios alternativos.
En conclusión, haré mi parte para contribuir al esfuerzo para hacer de la IAMCR una organización mas transparente y accesible—el problema del pago de una cuota para tomar parte sigue representando un serio obstáculo para varias personas—y seguir haciendo llegar las instancias de los miembros de la sección al nivel directivo de nuestra organización.
