Reflections on Research Methods for Emerging Media and Communication Scholars
On April 3rd, 2023, the Emerging Scholars Network hosted a workshop for early career media and communication scholars focused on research methods.
The event, entitled “Reflections on Research Methods for Media and Communication Scholars,” was the latest in the ESN’s professionalization workshop series, which aims to share knowledge with emerging scholars globally and address existing inequities in access to professionalization resources by hosting events with established scholars in accessible formats.
The section was really happy with the success of the event, which was hosted online and attended by at least 93 individuals. It featured presentations by Dr. Marisa von Bülow from the University of Brasília; Professor Manuel Puppis from the University of Fribourg, and Dr. Fernanda Rosa from Virginia Tech. The presentations engaged with methodological questions from cross-platform analysis to interviews in policy analysis to code ethnography and featured important reflections on researcher and participant positionality, encountering the unexpected in a research project , and why one should not get too caught up in sample size reflections.
We are sharing the video of the event in hopes that emerging scholars can continue to benefit from the reflections shared by our generous colleagues.
