Janina Islam Abir from Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB), was awarded a travel grant to present her paper titled "Debunking the myths of women empowerment: Stories from women migrant returnees in rural areas of Bangladesh" to the Gender and Communication Section, at IAMCR2024.
In this article, she reflects on the enriching experiences of attending the Christchurch conference, and the invaluable opportunities for professional growth and networking that the travel grant made possible:
"As one of IAMCR 2024's travel grant recipients, I had the great opportunity to attend this year's conference in Christchurch, New Zealand. This experience was not only enriching but also immensely motivating since it provided an opportunity to interact with researchers and professionals from all over the world.
My participation was significantly supported by the travel grant I received from IAMCR. Attending international conferences can be financially difficult for young researchers. The grant covered my travel expenses, allowing me to focus on making the most of the conference without the pressure of budgetary constraints.
One of the most rewarding experiences was presenting my paper among esteemed media and communication scholars. The feedback and discussions that followed were incredibly valuable, offering new insights that will undoubtedly enhance my research.
Another substantial component of the conference was the opportunity to establish connections with fellow participants. These interactions have not only expanded my academic horizons but also facilitated the development of potential collaborations.
With its rich cultural history and friendly people, Christchurch itself made the entire experience more enjoyable. During breaks, I was able to explore the city and its surroundings, which helped me respect its unique charm.
I am deeply grateful to IAMCR for giving me a travel grant and allowing me to have this unforgettable experience."
