The call for papers below is an extraordinary reopening of the original Beijing call for papers for authors who did not submit to the Beijing conference but want their work considered for Tampere.
The Ethics of Society and Ethics of Communication Working Group of the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR) invites the submission of abstracts of papers and proposals for panels for the 2020 Congress of the Association, which will be held from 12 to 16 July, 2020 at Tampere University in Tampere. Submissions for this extraordinary reopening will be accepted from Monday 17 February, 2020 until Monday 2 March 2020 at 23:59 UTC.
IAMCR conferences address many diverse topics defined by our 32 thematic sections and working groups. We also propose a single central theme to be explored throughout the conference with the aim of generating and exploring multiple perspectives in plenary sessions and in some of the sessions of the sections and working groups. The general conference theme for 2020 is “Reimagining the Digital Future: Building Inclusiveness, Respect and Reciprocity”.
We encourage researchers and practitioners from all fields of media and communication, with a particular interest for moral and ethical issues aiming to contribute to a better future for society and communication, to submit their contributions and join this vibrant community of researchers. We cordially invite young researchers to send their proposals and panels and join the ETH WG Young Scholar Ethics Network (please contact Ben-Hur Deméneck, chair of the ETH-YSEN (b.demeneck@uol.com.br) for other initiatives, as there is a slot for the YSEN).

Within the general frame of the Tampere 2020 CfP, some of the topics that may be addressed are:

- Ecology and respect for the environment in the media and beyond

- Teaching programs and projects in digital communication: building inclusiveness, respect and reciprocity
- Human rights, NGOs and news media; empowering victims in digital environments
- Media, change and development: forefront ethical issues
- 2.0 ethics for society & communication
- Otherness in fictional contents and advertising
- Business ethics for communication in the digital era
- Building respect and inclusiveness in research in communication
This list of topics is not exhaustive; any proposal regarding the main theme or other themes of interest to the ETH WG will be taken into consideration.
We invite submissions of individual research papers and panels (please check carefully the IAMCR guidelines for panel proposals – an abstract for each paper and a summary are required, each of them with title and author).
Languages
Abstracts in English, Spanish, French or Portuguese are welcome. Presentations are also welcome in any of the four languages, but we recommend researchers to prepare a Power Point in English to facilitate and guarantee a common ground for the discussion. In the sessions, assistance for the translation of questions or answers will be provided by the Heads of the WG if necessary.
Guidelines for abstracts
Abstracts should be between 300 and 500 words. All abstracts must be submitted at https://iamcr2020.exordo.com. Abstracts sent by email will not be accepted.
It is expected that authors will submit only one (1) abstract. However, under no circumstances should there be more than two (2) abstracts bearing the name of the same author, either individually or as part of any group of authors. Please note also that the same abstract or another version with minor variations in title or content must not be submitted to more than one section or working group. Any such submissions will be deemed to be in breach of the conference guidelines and will be rejected. Authors submitting them risk being removed entirely from the conference programme.
For full papers there are not specific guidelines, we recommend APA 6th but feel free to send your full paper in any other consistent style. We strongly recommend researchers to prepare full papers up to 6000-8000 words (introduction, review of the literature, research questions, methods, results & discussion, conclusions and references) aiming to publication within or outside the Eth WG initiatives.
Evaluation Criteria
Submitted abstracts will generally be evaluated on the basis of:
1. Theoretical contribution
2. Methods
3. Quality of writing
4. Literature review
5. Relevance of the proposal to the work of the Working group
6. Originality and/or significance
