The Participatory Communication Research (PCR) Section had a project accepted for funding by the Section and Working Group Project Fund. The USD 2,000 grant will be used to partially fund two events: an IAMCR 2017 pre-conference Participatory Advertising: A global approach with a Latin American focus and Imagine Europe: Virtual Reality (VR) Performance and Panel Discussion.
The overall project, “Extending Participatory Communication”, has two main objectives:
- To organize two academic events outside the main conference of IAMCR, in order to strengthen the visibility of the section, and its intellectual remit;
- To expand the fields of interest of the PCR section (by focussing on advertising and performance)
Participatory Advertising: A global approach with a Latin American focus is the name of a pre-conference to be organised in Bogotá, Colombia prior to the annual IAMCR conference in Cartagena de Indias. Questions to be addressed at this event include: How is participation changing advertising? What power (im)balances does it convey? Is it more effective? Does participation question the power of brands or, on the contrary, makes them stronger? What challenges does participation pose to the advertising industry? And to consumers?
The second event, Imagine Europe: Virtual Reality (VR) Performance and Panel Discussion, will be jointly organised by the PCR Section and Open Media Lab at Roskilde University. Through an interactive performance and a panel discussion, featuring a media
artist group and a panel of academics, including IAMCR members from the Eurocomm research network, formerly known as Orecomm, participants will be invited to work together on a new imaginary of Europe.
More information on both events can be found on the Participatory Communication Research Section webpage.
