The Environment, Science and Risk Communication Working Group invites submissions of abstracts for papers for the 2013 IAMCR conference to be held from June 25-29, 2013 at Dublin City University, Dublin, Ireland.
The deadline for submissions is January 28, 2013.
The conference will be held under the general theme, ‘Crises, 'Creative Destruction' and the Global Power and Communication Orders’. The general conference theme is thus highly relevant to the increasingly global communication, power and crisis themes and concerns that are central to the Environment, Science and Risk Communication Group.
Papers from the full range of environment-science-risk-communication topics and perspectives will be considered, and those relating to the conference theme will be particularly welcome.
Key themes for the Dublin sessions of the Working Group will include:
- Media-communication roles in environmental crises and disasters
- Uneven access to technological, political and social capital in the context of science/environment/risk communication
- Visual media constructions of the environment
- Global news and information flows in environmental communication
- Environmental crises, corporate spin and news management
- Media and global environmental change and controversy
- Fighting back: empowerment of the local, the regional and sustainable integration into the global
- Media and public understanding of science/environment issues
- Science and health-related media panics
- Science/environmental journalism
- Political uses/constructions of nature
- Media, advocacy and environmental pressure groups
- Environmental activism and new media
- Whose story? Narrating/communicating global environmental change.
- Processes of (de-)politicization in public and media discourses on technological and environmental risks
- Media and democratic debate and citizenship in risk politics
Deadlines
The deadline for submission of abstracts is 28 January 2013.
All abstract submissions must be made centrally via the Open Conference System (OCS) at http://iamcr-ocs.org. OCS will open on 15 November 2012, and will close on 28 January 2013. Early submission is strongly encouraged.
Decisions on acceptance of abstracts will be communicated to individual applicants by the Working Group Head 28 February 2013.
Submission of completed papers via IAMCR Open Conference System (OCS) no later than May 28, 2013.
Guidelines for Abstracts
Abstracts should be between 250 and 500 words, and should:
- have a clear title
- include the name(s) of author(s) and professional title(s) (i.e. professor, postdoctoral fellow, independent researcher, graduate student, student, etc.)
- outline the research objectives/questions/hypothesis
- outline the theoretical framework and methodology if relevant
- make clear the main argument proposed
Bibliographies and author profiles are not required.
Individuals may submit 1 abstract (paper) per Section or Working Group as lead author, and a maximum of 2 abstracts (papers) to a single IAMCR conference in general. Presenters are expected to bring fully developed work to the conference. Prior to the conference, it is expected that a completed paper will be submitted to Section, Working Group, Session Chairs, and/or Discussants.
