Letter from the President
IAMCR’s 60th anniversary in Cartagena
Janet Wasko, President
Dear Colleagues,
Our next conference will be in Cartagena, Colombia, July 16-20, 2017, and celebrates IAMCR’s 60th anniversary. The theme is “Transforming Culture, Politics & Communication: New Media, New Territories, New Discourses” and will provide us the opportunity to both celebrate and to reflect on the past 60 years of media and communication research, as well as the changing and emerging nature of contemporary culture, politics and communication. Travel grants for Cartagena
Sixteen travel grants of up to US$1,500 will be made available to early-stage scholars, who are members in good standing of IAMCR, reside in low and middle income countries and have papers accepted for presentation at our upcoming conference in Cartagena, Colombia.
The travel grants that IAMCR offers every year are financed with a portion of membership fees and with the voluntary contributions of IAMCR members. If you want to know more, visit the travel grant page on the website where you can read short articles by former travel grant recipients like Chikezie Uzuegbunam from Nigeria, who told us about how the travel grant he received allowed him to get feedback on his work, build his network, publish and eventually open up an opportunty to study in South Africa. You can also make a donation to the Travel Grant Fund from the page or when you renew your membership.

Renewal notices were recently sent to all individual members and to the administrative contacts of institutional members and reminders have been sent to those who haven’t yet renewed. Nominate your PhD student representatives
Institutional members of IAMCR have always been able to name 10 representatives of their institution at no cost and for the past few years they have also been able to designate 10 PhD student representatives. However only a few institutions have taken advantage of this opportunity. If you are a representative of an institution you can see the list of your fellow representatives and PhD representatives by logging into your account and choosing My membership from the menu. If you want to nominate a PhD student representative, tell the account administrator (in the list of representatives this is the person with the role admin). If you have any problems, contact the new institutional helpdesk at institutions@iamcr.org.

News from IAMCR sections and working groups
IAMCR’s 31 sections and working groups are the heart of the association. At the core of their work is the organisation of sessions at the annual conference – in Leicester there were more than 350 and we expect a similar amount for Cartagena – but many of them also undertake activities outside of the conference. They run mailing lists and produce bulletins for their members, publish books, organise pre-conferences, keep their section or working group members communicated throughout the year with social media accounts, and other activities.
PCR Section initiatives
The Participatory Communication Research Section undertook a particularly ambitious activity recently when it organised a PhD Winter School on Participation and Communication in cooperation with Jinan University in Guangzhou, China. The section’s page features various articles about the initiatives, including the programme, and a selection of photos taken at the event. On the same page you will find an article about the section’s initiative to establish a network of regional officers.
S-WG Activities
We have put together a list of some of the activities, mailing lists and social media accounts of some other sections and working groups. The best way to know what your section or working groups is to make sure that your name is on the list of members. To do so, login to your IAMCR account and select My Sections and Working Groups from the menu. Join up to five groups and you will always have the latest news of their activities.
