Statement
I am pleased to stand up as a candidate for IAMCR International Council, supported by Prof Thomas Tufte, willing to contribute to the conduction of a diverse and inclusive organization. The resources I bring come from my training and constant work in and with grassroots groups in Latin America and networking with colleagues engaged in decolonial and critical debates.
I am a journalist by training (Universidade Estadual de Ponta Grossa, Brazil) with a PhD in Political and Social Sciences (Université catholique de Louvain (Belgium) and currently a Lecturer at Loughborough University London (UK). My work is strongly inspired by Paulo Freire – I co-organized a series of talks and publications around his legacy in the past years – and attached to the Latin American current of popular communication. I have just finished a three-year research funded by The Leverhulme Trust working with indigenous communities in the Brazilian and Ecuadorian Amazon region.
My profile can be found at https://www.lboro.ac.uk/research/experts/ana-cristina-suzina/ and most of my publications are available at the university’s repository.
I believe that organizations like IAMCR must be a place of encounter where science emerges as a result of dialogue, empathy and honest exchange. The International Council seems to be the right place to push for these values.

Ana Cristina Souzina for International Council
Ana Cristina Suzina for IC
Ana Cristina has been an important voice in the effort to decolonize and dewesternize media and communication studies, and as such, brings a much needed perspective to IAMCR.
Endorsement Ana Suzina
I have known Ana for ten years, when we were partners at the Université Catholique de Louvain (Belgium), she as a PhD student and me on a PhD research stay. Since then we have worked together on several projects and have maintained a friendship.
She is a brilliant Brazilian researcher trained in Belgium, currently a lecturer at Loughborough University in England. She speaks at least four languages (Portuguese, English, Spanish and French), which is not only a linguistic but also an intercultural skill. Her work on communication, social movements and social change is outstanding. She has also participated in academic associations, such as ALAIC and IAMCR, and activist collectives, such as Tierra Común. At IAMCR, she has been a presenter, reviewer and session chair at conferences in the Participatory Communication Research Section and the Community Communication and Alternative Media Section.
Her presence in the IC would contribute significantly regarding critical thinking, diversity and interculturality.
Endorsement Ana Suzina
I can frankly say that Ana Suzina is one of the most brilliant scholars I have ever met. Her brilliance has inspired me in so many ways - from workshop ideas to reading recommendations to just picking her brains on various research and life dilemmas. With all this brilliance, she is also extremely humble. She is also a great listener, someone you can go to for advice, for venting out, for a great laugh. The International Council would really benefit from having someone like her - someone who brings in fresh ideas, but can also take into account different (conflicting) perspectives, and suggest creative alternatives. She is also a great role model for female scholars, mothers, people with caring responsibilities, anyone who believes that research and education can make a difference in the world. I wholeheartedly endorse her candidacy for the IC.
