The conference theme anticipates the 60th anniversary of the IAMCR in 2017 an organisation which has played a strong role in the development of media and communication studies. Although scholars have long been interested in memory and culture, advancements in technologies are providing new and innovative opportunities to think about how it is created, preserved, passed on, and archived. Within academia, we have witnessed increasing interest in cultural memory studies – from media represents the past, oral history projects and growing interest in digitizing data leading to the history of everything.
The Ethics of Society and Ethics of Communication Working Group is concerned with ethical and deontological problems and challenges of the communicators and the communication media and how values help to improve the practice of communication in information, persuasion and entertainment. As this year´s conference theme seeks to explore the relationship between memory, commemoration and communication, we invite researchers to bring into focus ethics key cases and turning points along the history of communication, and how they are (re)mediated, historicised, documented, archived, remembered, forgotten and (re)told. We welcome research that shows lessons learned by the media ecosystem along the past decades as well as not so well-known cases or idiosyncratic problems in the field of Ethics Communication, contributions by relevant scholars and the relationships between communication and other subsystems where principles and values might clash such as political, health, migration, etc.
Looking to the past in the era of sharp speed can lead us to better understand the challenges of our present and evolving ecosystem. Not so far away, the Leveson Inquiry has set on the table the fragility of some communication principles as well as the relationship between news media and the spheres of power; also the Ebola coverage raised questions regarding lessons learned in the past. In the entertainment field, memories and commemoration of Orson Welles´ experiment in the thirties converged as Spanish TV program "Salvados" broadcasted a false documentary only a year ago. Series and realities as well as advertising features configure a rich and complex universe of representations of the past, the present and the future, with associated values.
Looking forward, papers might also want to address where the field is heading. We advise researchers interested in looking forward in our field to check also to ETH Regional Preconference "Setting the Agenda for Research on Ethics of Communication & Society", to be held in Valencia (Spain) in July 22 (CFP forthcoming).
IAMCR 2016 provides the opportunity to on the nature and significance of accepted principles for communication: methaethical research as well as normative and applied ethics provide relevant contributions to the theme. The theme also opens up space to commemorate the IAMCRs history and contribution to the field of media and communication research. The Ethics of Society and Ethics of Communication Working Group welcomes paper and panel proposals that engage with the IAMCR as an organisation as well as the contributions its members have made over the years.
The Ethics of Society and Ethics of Communication Working Group considers the general frame "Memory, Commemoration and Communication: Looking Back, Looking Forward" and proposes the following themes to researchers:
- Media practices and principles
- Self-regulatory bodies and codes
- Case-studies/core values
- Lessons learned/not learned
- The contribution of professional associations & scholars
- Generic studies of Ethics & Communication
ETH accepts panel proposals, workshop sessions and research papers proposals. We welcome submissions from early career researchers (ETH Young Scholars Network) and veteran scholars alike, as well as those ranging from the empirical to the theoretical and methodological perspectives.
Submission information
Individual papers and panels are possible, but all proposals must be submitted through the online Open Conference System from 1 December 2015 – 15 February 2016. Early submission is strongly encouraged. There are to be no email submissions of abstracts addressed to any Working Group Head.
Submissions Format
All proposals must include title, author/coordinator name(s), institutional affiliation(s) and full contact information (mailing address, email address, and telephone number).
For individual or co-authored papers, applicants must submit a 300-500 word abstract.
For panel proposals, please follow the OCS instructions.
Mode of submission: via IAMCR Open Conference System at http://iamcr-ocs.org
This section accepts abstracts and presentations in English, French, Portuguese or Spanish. This four languages are also accepted for presentations though a PowerPoint in English is recommended for better understanding and discussion.
It is expected that for the most part, only one (1) abstract will be submitted per person for consideration by the Conference. And, under no circumstances should there be more than two (2) abstracts bearing the name of the same applicant either individually or as part of any group of authors. Please note also that the same abstract or another version with minor variations in title or content must not be submitted to other Sections or Working Groups of the Association for consideration, after an initial submission. Such submissions will be deemed to be in breach of the conference guidelines and will be automatically rejected by the Open Conference System, by the relevant Head or by the Conference Programme Reviewer. Such applicants risk being removed entirely from the conference programme.
Submitted abstracts will generally be evaluated on the basis of: 1) theoretical contribution, 2) methods, 3) quality of writing, 4) literature review, 5) relevance of the submission to the work of the Ethics of Society and Ethics of Communication Working Group 6) originality and/or significance of the work.

Deadlines
The deadline for submission of abstracts is 15 February 2016. The OCS system will close at midnight GMT on 15 February 2016.
Decisions on acceptance of abstracts will be communicated to applicants by their Section or Working Group Head no later than 1 April 2016.
Conference registration will be open in March 2016.
For those whose abstracts are accepted, full conference papers are to be submitted by 30 June 2016.
