Nico Carpentier, President, IAMCR

Ōtautahi Christchurch 2024
The University of Canterbury will host IAMCR's 2024 conference from 30 June to 4 July in Christchurch, New Zealand. The conference will explore the theme: "Whiria te tāngata / Weaving People Together: Communicative projects of decolonising, listening and engaging". Watch a video prepared by the Local Organising Committee, introducing the conference theme and the host city.
The call for proposals has been launched, and submissions will be received from 4 December 2023 through 7 February 2024, at 23.59 UTC.

2023 Grants and Awards recipients
Four awards were granted at the Lyon 2023 conference to papers accepted for presentation at our sections and working groups sessions.
Please join us in congratulating the awardees. They are:
- Prize in Memory of Dallas W. Smythe: Tianyang Fu (University of Chicago, US), Christopher Petersen (Lakehead University Orillia, Canada) and Guo Xiaoxin (School of Culture and Media, Central University of Finance and Economics, China).
- Urban Communication Award: Sandra Jeppesen (Lakehead University Orillia, Canada), Mingjun Zhao and Yongliang Liu (Tsinghua University, China), María Isabel Norena Wiswell (UNIMINUTO, Colombia) and Maria Helena Botero Ospina (Universidad del Rosario, Colombia).
- Climate Change Communication Award: Manoj Kumar Das (Central University of Sikkim, India) and Subha Das Mollick (Aliah University, India), Joseph Gotte (Ceditec - Universite Paris-Est- Creteil, France), and Julia Cope (Annenberg School of Communication - University of Pennsylvania, US)

In addition, 23 Travel Grants were awarded to early-stage scholars who are also members of IAMCR from low and middle-income countries. The grants provided them with the opportunity to participate in and present their work at the Lyon conference. Read their testimonies >
Call for new working groups
IAMCR is calling for new thematic Working Groups. We aim to add up to three new Working Groups to our current 15. This expansion will foster collaboration and exploration of fresh topics in media and communication. The deadline to submit applications for new working groups is 15 February 2024. Call for IAMCR Peace Fellowships
With the goal of fostering academic dialogue and collaboration across conflict zones, we have established IAMCR Peace Fellowships, two-year fellowships that aim to unite scholars from regions or communities involved in antagonistic conflicts. The deadline for application is 15 December 2023. More >
PhD Research Webinar
The IAMCR webinar series will continue in 2024. Since its inception in March 2021, this initiative has successfully conducted 15 webinars, all of which are available for viewing on the IAMCR webinar channel in Vimeo. Webinars can be proposed by any section or working group, or by IAMCR committees and task forces. If you are interested in putting one on, contact your section or working group.
Clearinghouse for Public Statements
IAMCR’s Clearinghouse for Public Statements issued a position statement on the role of information and communication sciences in the governance of artificial intelligence (AI) to the 18th annual United Nations Internet Governance Forum that was held from 8-12 October 2023 in Kyoto, Japan.
The Clearinghouse processes statements and/or manages the process of signing statements generated by others, that are principally concerned with issues relating to media/communications and where IAMCR members have substantive scientific expertise that provides a basis for seeking to influence discursive or material practice.

Open science roundtables
The IAMCR Publications Committee hosted a series of roundtables exploring the politics of knowledge and its dissemination. The first one, titled “What does the Open Science Movement mean for the future of the field of media and communication?,” was held online, and the recording is available here. The second roundtable in the series, titled “Finding Pathways to Open Access,” was held during the 2023 Lyon conference. Stay tuned for the next edition in the series!
Section and Working Group news
Leadership changes
Several of IAMCR’s thematic sections and working groups held online elections for new heads this year. Please join us in thanking the outgoing heads of sections and working groups and welcoming the new ones. ESN workshop on research methods
The Emerging Scholars Network hosted a workshop for early career media and communication scholars focused on research methods. The event, entitled “Reflections on Research Methods for Media and Communication Scholars,” was the latest in the ESN’s professionalization workshop series, which aims to share knowledge with emerging scholars globally and address existing inequities in access to professionalization resources by hosting events with established scholars in accessible formats. Political Economy Journal
Volume 10 Issue 1 of the Political Economy of Communication is now available. The peer-reviewed and open access journal is published under the auspices of the IAMCR Political Economy Section. IAMCR colleagues that presented papers at the IAMCR 2023 conference are encouraged to submit their work to the journal.

- "The Handbook of Gender, Communication, and Women's Human Rights" edited by Margaret Gallagher and Aimee Vega Montiel.
