Countdown to IAMCR 2016
IAMCR 2016 will feature plenaries, special and invited sessions covering topics from jazz to peace journalism to the BBC. There will also be pre-conferences, social activities and the core programme of papers that highlights the diversity and richness of media scholars and of IAMCR's 31 thematic Sections and Working Groups.
With two weeks to go until IAMCR kicks off at the University of Leicester, here are some of the things you can look forward to if you are attending the conference.

The most up to date version of the conference programme is now online as an interactive app embedded in the conference website. You can browse through the many sessions and activities, If you login, either with a sched.org account or Facebook, you can start preparing your personalised schedule. If you're using you mobile, try the link for both iPhone and Android. The app will hold all of the details on conference events, important information, FAQs, maps of the local area and information on social visits. It will work online or offline and will guarantee you'll have all of the necessary information in your pocket when you need it.
Abstracts and papers
The more than 1,300 abstracts for papers and panels that will be presented at IAMCR 2016 are available for download as a series of abstract books for each section and working group. You can read the abstracts of the other papers being presented in your own session or any session that interests you. Download the abstract books
All the submitted full papers have been made available to section and working group heads, who may choose to distribute them to panellists, moderators and members of their section or working group. We hope this will contribute to the quality of discussion and collaboration at IAMCR 2016. Contact the heads of your section or working group if you want access to any of the papers before the conference.
Plenary sessions
IAMCR 2016 will feature three plenary sessions – the opening plenary on 27 July, one on Communication Rights, and one focused on the central theme of the conference, Memory, Commemoration and Communication. Read more >>>
Awards @ IAMCR 2016
Congratulations to all the winners of the various awards that will be presented at IAMCR 2016. The prize in memory of Herbert Schiller will be awarded at the opening plenary, the climate communication research prize during the plenary on Thursday, and the Urban Communication research grant at the plenary session on Friday. Throughout the conference we'll be celebrating the presence of the 27 recipients of the travel grants offered by IAMCR and the Leicester organising committee.
Pre-conferences
There are a record number of pre-conferences organized for IAMCR 2016. Some will be held in Leicester while others in universities in London, Leeds, Canterbury, Reading and Valencia, Spain. Read more >>>
Social Calendar
There will be plenty of opportunities to let your hair down at IAMCR 2016. A dance, the gala dinner, or a get-together over food and drinks with a group of colleagues.

IAMCR Updates
New leadership for IAMCR
IAMCR elected a new Executive Board (EB) and International Council (IC) in June. Janet Wasko was reelected president and will be joined on the Executive Board by 2 vice-presidents, Graham Murdock and Aimée Vega, a secretary general, Gerard Goggin and a treasurer, Anthony Moretti. Fifteen members were elected to the International Council, which is made up of the 15 elected members plus the heads of IAMCR's 15 thematic sections. The new EB and IC will take position during the General Assembly in Leicester.

General assembly
The newly-elected Executive Board and International Council will take position during IAMCR's General Assembly in Leicester on 31 July. The draft agenda has been sent to all members and is published at http://iamcr.org/governance/ga2016
Section heads to be chosen in Leicester
Seventeen of IAMCR's sections and working groups will be holding elections for officers during IAMCR 2016. A list of the ones that will be voting is at http://iamcr.org/s-wg/elections2016. It includes links to the election announcements and the names and statements of members who have put forth their candidacies. Elections are held during the business meetings of each section or working group.
Thinking ahead - IAMCR 2017 in Cartagena, Colombia
While Leicester is in the final preparation stage for IAMCR 2016, Colombia has already begun preparations for IAMCR 2017. The host city, Cartagena de Indias, is described by Lonely Planet as "the undisputed queen of the Caribbean coast, a fairy-tale city of romance, legends and superbly preserved beauty lying within an impressive 13km of centuries-old colonial stone walls." Amparo Cadavid, dean of the School of Communication at UNIMINUTO, host of the event and one of Colombia's largest universities, will present the conference plan at Leicester. Read more >>>

Co-sponsored events
IAMCR has co-sponsored 4 prestigious events over the past few months.
- Histories of Communication Studies. Two meetings have been organised by IAMCR and the Société française des sciences de l'information et de la communication (SFSIC) on the "Histories of Communication Studies project. The first was on 8-10 June at SFSIC's 20th congress and the other will take place at IAMCR in Leicester on 29 July. Read a report on the intitiative.
- "What is Media?", Portland, Oregon, USA from 14-16 April, 2016. Organised by the University of Oregon. See a report.
- "Comparing media systems in BRICS countries: A review of conventional paradigms". Organised by the Department of Media of the Higher School of Economics (Moscow) the conference was held in Moscow from April 25 – 26, 2016.
- UNESCO Research Conference on Safety of Journalists was held on 3-4 May 2016 in connection with World Press Freedom Day (WPFD) in Helsinki, Finland. Organized by UNESCO and the UNESCO Chair at University of Gothenburg, in cooperation with IAMCR and University of Sheffield, University of Tampere and University of Helsinki. New issue of The Political Economy of Communication
Vol. 4, No. 1 of the journal of IAMCR's Political Economy Section has hit the streets. Guest editors Brett Caraway and Jessica Lapp, both from the University of Toronto, focused the issue on Circuits of Struggle, the theme of the 2015 conference of the Union for Democratic Communications (UDC).
