The deadline for proposal submissions is 15 February 2016.  See bottom of the page for timeline and other important dates.

Conference theme: "Memory, Commemoration and Communication: Looking Back, Looking Forward"

While proposals on any topic within the area of International Communication will be considered, proposals relating to the Conference theme will receive priority.  Such papers would engage with the way the concepts of memory and commemoration, and the different ways in which the past is (re)mediated, historicised, documented, archived, remembered, forgotten and (re)told. We are especially interested in proposals that examine questions of memory and commemoration within the globalized media landscape, the shifting geopolitics away from the metropolitan centres of the Global North to nations and regions of the ‘Rest’, and the media practices that emerge in these new transnational spaces.  Comparative papers are also of special interest.

The International Communication Section aims to provide a space for researchers to discuss questions around memory, commemoration and communication in international communication, through the presentation of empirical and theoretical papers.  Questions asked might include:

  • What strategies are used to share memories, either collectively or individually? How does this occur translaterally? Transborder?
  • What role does privilege/inequality play in the creation, sharing, or preserving of memory?
  • How do individuals, groups, or cultures transmit memories (inter)nationally?
  • How are events remembered, retold, preserved or erased differently in different locations, historic periods, spaces and cultures?
  • How is storytelling conceived of as a form of global cultural memory? How does this occur (inter)nationally?
  • When looking to the future, what is the relationship between the forms of memory and ideas about media and technologies moving towards societies?
  • How shifting geopolitics and formations like BRICS influence memory and communication practices
  • Ethical challenges in the mediation of memory, commemoration and communication
  • Contested norms and practices in memory, commemoration and communication
