Statement
It is my privilege to submit this self-nomination for IAMCR’s International Council. As detailed below, I have a background as a scholar and administrator of international education and the field of communication spanning back over 30 years, so believe that I can serve as a productive member of the Council.
My scholarly interests in global communication, environmental communication, ethnographic method, and Latin American media and cultural theory support several of the IAMCR’s divisions. My published work includes The Media Commons: Globalization and Environmental Discourses (University of Illinois Press, 2017), Negotiating Democracy: Media Transformation in Emerging Democracies (SUNY, 2007) and Global Media Studies (Routledge, 2003), as well as numerous journals and book chapters. I’ve also translated into English articles by some of Latin America’s most prominent communication scholars.
I am Professor in the Department of Media Studies and Production in Temple University’s Klein College of Media and Communication, and currently serve as the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at Temple Rome. I was a Fulbright-Garcia Robles fellow in Mexico, and sit on the advisory boards of the Centre for Climate & Society, Dublin City University and the Center for Advanced Research in Global Communication (CARGC), Penn’s Annenberg School of Communication, and am a founding member of the Global Fusion Consortium.
I'd like to support the candidacy of Patrick Murphy for International Council, who was a colleague of mine at Temple University for many years. (I am now emeritus). As his scholarship shows, Patrick is a scholar committed to international perspectives, social justice, and environmental stewardship. He also has considerable administrative experience. His administrative work has always been as well organized, democratic, and fair minded. Patrick will be a reliable and helpful member of the International Council.
