The Gender and Communication Section of the International Association for Media and Communication Research announces its call for papers for the IAMCR Congress in Braga, Portugal (July 18-22, 2010). The theme for the Congress is 'Communication and Citizenship: Rethinking Crisis and Change'.
The section seeks research which balances theory and practice, and explores the relationship between gender and communication, both mediated and non-mediated. In keeping with our philosophy of inclusivity, we welcome contributions without regard to empirical, theoretical, or disciplinary approach.
Although submissions are welcome on any topic involving gender, media and communication, this year we wish to encourage papers and panel proposals that examine connections to the conference theme (citizenship, crisis, change), as well as journalism, masculinity, and issues concerning sexualities.
And, in keeping with our section’s tradition of exploring points of intersect between gender, media and communication and other areas of substantive interest within IAMCR, this year we wish to convene two joint panels, with:
- the Political Communication Section, on the theme: “Assessing Gender Bias in Contemporary Electoral Communication”. Those who wish to submit a proposal for this session are encouraged to contact either Philippe J. Maarek (maarek[AT]univ-paris12.fr), Head of the Political Communication Section, or Todd Holden.
- the HIV/AIDS Working Group. While many realize the importance of communication in the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS, the gender dimensions of communication in the pandemic are not always well understood. We invite papers from those working specifically on gender issues as they relate to HIV/AIDS and communication. Those who wish to submit a proposal for this session are encouraged to contact Margaretha Geertsema.
As a general rule, irrespective of the topic proposed, complete panel proposals are encouraged, although individual papers will be considered. By rule, IAMCR does not permit submission of identical abstracts to more than one section.
Abstracts should be between 250 and 500 words, and bibliographies and author profiles are not required. However, please include: the name(s) of author(s); professional title(s) (i.e. professor, postdoctoral fellow, independent researcher, graduate student, student, etc.); institutional affiliation; and e-mail/contact information. Abstracts should be sent only through the conference website,
The deadline for abstract submissions is January 31st, 2010. Notification of disposition will be made on March 15th, 2010. Deadline for full papers is April 30th, 2010. Please note that IAMCR accepts presentations in English, French and Spanish, however, if possible, we request that abstracts be submitted in English.
Questions about submissions or consultations regarding possible panels should be directed to Section Chair, Todd Holden (holden.intcul[AT]gmail.edu), Section Vice-Chair, Margaretha Geertsema, (mgeertse[AT]butler.edu), and/or Section Vice-Chair, Maria Edstrom (maria.edstrom[AT]jmg.gu.se).
